DECEMBER 2006
A landscape clean and crisp in form and colour, rich in inspiration is all that an artist could wish for, begging to be used, and full of inherent possibilities... (Frank Carmichael)

By Theresa Quirk
Letter from the Director

I am thrilled to be part of a wonderful and much needed service to the artist community both here and across the pond! In the coming months there will be much growth and to those of you who have already involved yourselves, welcome!

Unlike an Art Association, this is different. So keep abreast of the many changes coming ahead by subscribing today. Our vision is to capture what cannot be kept and to create and preserve the art in our communities for generations to come. Explore our countrysides, meet new artists, learn new methodologies, and grow and prosper in rewarding environments. Together we can make a heavy statement and create global movement.

The HAU welcomes your input and submission of your articles regarding travel locations, art, and artists and experiences. So please send your briefs in, as we'd love to hear from you!
Sincerely,
Theresa Quirk

Welcome, John Stoa
Scotland Central, Dundee

I wish to welcome John Stoa as a new HAU Advisor for the Scotland Central Area of Dundee.

John uses oil paint, acrylic paint, and watercolour along with strong colour tones to create drama in his Scottish landscape paintings, which are made in Glendoll near the Corrie Fee, the Dighty Burn in Dundee, the dramatic setting of the Forfar Loch, and Loch Lubnaig in the Trossachs.

John has recently accompanied a party of American en-plenair mountain painters from the Colorado area that came to Scotland in October of 2006 for the upcoming annual show "Castles & Clans." John helped with selecting the best places to paint, accommodations, finding places to eat, and enjoying social entertainment together. The Exhibition will be held at Lochvale Fine Arts in Colorado. For more information on this go to www.lochvalefineart.com.

For more information on John and Scotland Central please contact John by visiting his web site at: www.johnstoa.com

Welcome, John Morris
Southwest Ireland
Killarney, County Kerry, County Cork, Ireland

John was born in Dublin in 1958. He has been painting since the late 1990s. Recently, he moved to Abbeyfeale, County Limerick to paint full-time. He has been married for fourteen years and has three children. Mostly self taught, John took painting lessons from Brian Quinn after meeting him painting plein air in 1997.

His paintings are about light and the effects of light on objects such as figures, water, and landscape; they highlight minute colour changes. Composition is important and he therefore spends a lot of time getting it right before he even starts to paint.

John believes we can all learn from other painters. "I am aware of the lessons learned by other artists with regard to, for instance, composition, the division of the picture and colour theory. One can learn a lot by looking at other people’s work and by studying other artists."

He graduated from the prestigious Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles where he also taught drawing while still a student. His love for life and art is reflected in his superb paintings of a wide range of subjects done in several mediums. Ned had worked as an illustrator for 25 years while building a solid foundation of professionalism and he has worked as a successful full-time artist since 1984.

Ned has continued to enhance his knowledge and skills by taking workshops with master artists Harley Brown, Richard Schmid, Bettina Steinke, Del Gish, and Sergei Bongart. Welcome, David Lussier
Northeast US, Connecticut

David is known for his expressive brushwork and emotional color. He is a contemporary American Impressionist. Rockport/Old Lyme influences.

David paints and teaches with his wife Pamela Simpson Lussier. They own a gallery in Woodstock CT. They specialize in New England painting. They will be happy to give a workshop across the pond also.

David Lussier's plein air landscapes reflect an interest in strong Impressionistic brushwork and the value relationships of color, as influenced by Robert Henri, George bellows and Emile Gruppe. David's oil landscapes feature bold strokes from a narrow palette of colors, conveying an emotional energy that begs the viewer to return for a second look.

Loch Vale Fine Art sponsored the annual art event, Castles and Clans, in Scotland, October 8-15th 2006, during which a group of acclaimed American artists, along with Scottish and English artists, spent a week painting in and around romantic Craighall Castle, which is located north of Edinburgh in Perthshire.

The event was based at Craighall Castle, which sits perched on a high cliff above the River Eright just north of Blairgowrie in Perthshire, however artists painted far afield from Eillean Donan Castle in the west to Glamis Castle in Angus as well as all around the castle and in the 300 acre estate.

Craighall Castle is the home to Lachie Rattray who can be contacted at www.craighall.co.uk
The Scottish weather in late summer provided a range of sunny periods along with excellent heavy showers to early morning mists, which together created an atmosphere of nostalgic romance and drama so different from the American climate around Colorado where 300 days of sunshine is normal.

Meet the Artists

This group of professional American artists painted alongside Peter Taylor from Lancashire in England, and alongside John Todd from Moray and John Stoa from Dundee in Scotland.

Painting in Ireland
by Nathalie Hall

If you enjoy painting landscapes this is one of the most mystical places to visit. Just a short flight away, Ireland has a vast unspoiled coastline as well as lush green pastures, distant mountains, and barren dry land. The atmosphere offers challenging atmospheres and the moist air makes the colors come alive. The mood is simply captivating.

The Connemarra
If you're thinking of painting in Ireland start in the Connemarra, a real favorite with artists. A few hours North of Shannon Airport*, Renvyle House Hotel is remotely located on the unspoiled coast of Connemara and is nestled between the mountains and the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It is surrounded by some 200 acres of farm, lake and walking lands. Renyvle is also centrally located near Twelve Bens and the Atlantic Ocean so that it is surrounded by Inishbofin, Inisturk, and the Clare Islands. Their web site is, http://www.renvyle.com. Sabina Flaherty of the Hotel has wonderful rates available for artists especially during the mid-week. You can call her direct at: Tel. 00 353 95 43511.
*Located in Co. Clare, Shannon Airport is an hour and a half's drive south of Galway City.

The local weather forecast this week for the Galway area is 42 - 53°

While you're not painting, you can enjoy the local pubs where there is always something going on. During the day they offer reasonable meals that are quite good. The many locals who visit the pubs in the evening enjoy listening to live music, spreading gossip, and their unparalleled art of storytelling is amusing.

New Book Released

Landscape Painting - Inside and Out by Kevin Macphearson

Kevin MacPhearson who has brought us such valuable tools and workshops has just released another great book to add to his already popular books and videos. His first book, "Fill Your Oil Paintings with Light and Color", has guided many beginning and struggling artists with its simple approach to picture making.

This book will encourage you to let your intuition rule when you paint outdoors. Step-by-step demonstrations and stimulating practice exercised in the studio will prepare you for your adventures outside. I encourage you to paint both outdoors and inside. Contemplative study in the solitude of your studio is important to your development into a highly skilled passionate plein air painter. A balanced approach in which you work both indoors and outdoors will foster your growth as an artist painting with purpose.

The great painters of the past created thoughtful art in the studios with no loss of the vitality and spontaneity we associate with painting outdoors. We will explore ways to relive the outdoor experience, enlarge our ideas and refine our compositions.

Discover the secrets to retaining the vitality, spontaneity and harmony of painting outdoors, while using your picture-making skills to create a more thoughtful and powerful statement.

Full of fresh air and fresh art, Landscape Painting Inside and Out will guide and encourage beginners while challenging more accomplished artists to bring greater vitality and a more natural, less formulaic finish to their paintings.

True Colors
by Robert Genn

There are colourists and there are colourists. There are those among us whose colours are clunky and crude--and there are those whose colours are deadly, tasty, and "right on." There are even some, like Paul Gauguin, who believe colour ought to be arbitrary--that is, it's a good idea if the sky is green and the grass is red.

While we're at it, there are those who think tone values are more important than hue--which is similar to saying colour is arbitrary. But even newly baptized novices know that if you manage to get the right colour your painting can look "true." God may work in light, but we mortals work in pigment. Getting the colour of the light through haze in front of a distant range of hills is, for many, the Holy Grail. It's not in the magic of some new pigment, it's a matter of looking, seeing, mixing, testing and adjusting.

Deadline: Dec. 15 2006
A show that asks: ‘What would Tatlin’s Tower be like if it was an ongoing construction in a 1,500-square-foot room with 12-foot ceilings and was designed to be a nice place to spend a day in?’
We invite artists from around the world to create their own response to Troy’s body of work and life ambition. Troy Hurtubise is nothing less than a Canadian Don Quixote. Artists are asked to take on the age-old theme of human-versus-nature, the conflicting desire to understand the natural, to commune with it, while also wanting to control and perhaps even defeat its cruelest aspects. Just as “Project Grizzly” addresses one man’s obsession with invincibility it also gives voice to a dream that is at the heart of the human experience. It may be a little bit insane, but it is moving nonetheless.

Landscape of Paterson, New Jersey
OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS
Flux Factory calls upon artists to take part in a project exploring the multifaceted landscape of Paterson, New Jersey. A team that includes designers, architects, and urban planners will initiate a dialogue between the historical, physiological, and physical aspects of this city as well as the people who live and work there. The goal is to design and then build a monument to Paterson, in Paterson. Artists attracted to this collaboration should send us a statement of interest and a brief history of past work. We are interested in what you’ve done (we are not looking for monument proposals) and why you would want to be a part of this project. Flux Factory has always emphasized collaboration and bringing groups of people together in order to create an experience. In this case, the idea of collaboration is being pushed to a whole new level: a collaboration that involves an entire city. Paterson, acting as a lens, will resound stories of the American experience and generate another forum of discussion and innovation. Artists should be willing to spend a large amount of time in Paterson for six weeks during early Summer 2007, possibly even living there for some period of time.
Please send your information and statements to:
