FEBRUARY 2007
I know that to paint the sea really well, you need to look at it every hour of every day in the same place so that you can understand its way in that particular spot and that is why I am working on the same motifs over and over again, four or six times even. - Monet

Barbara Maiser
Southern Connecticut, Old Lyme

Barbara Maisers distinctive style blends both control and spontaneity, illuminating her three principle concerns character, mood, and uniqueness. She holds a BS in biology from College Misericordia in Dallas, PA, and her creative process draws on her science background. There are many areas of science for artists to explore in relation to watercolor painting, Maiser says. First, by considering the physical and chemical properties of water, paint and paper, one can better understand how watercolor artists achieve the luminous glowing colors and fascinating textures so wonderfully characteristic of their medium. The artist can investigate the pure physics of light, color, and color mixing as well as the psychology of color perception. Science is knowledge of the general truths of a subject; creating good art necessitates knowing all one can about the science of art....

Cathy Mabius
Summerdale, PA

I can act as a clearinghouse of information on lodging, restaurants, art supplies, places to paint, and art related exhibits or workshops or paint outs during the time that a painter plans to visit. If I will be involved in an organized paint out, or will be leading one, I'll be glad to have you post it and would welcome anyone from out of town. Workshops: either scheduled workshops at my studio or those that I can schedule on request for 2 - 5 students. There also may be workshops at 4 area art associations with 1/2 hour near me. I also am closely involved with a new project (www.rt15arts.com)that may be a good option for those interested in art, either in the doing (workshops) or watching (demonstrations) or just viewing (exhibits, shows) I'd suggest it as a link on your website. You'll have a large listing of lodging choices and hospitality(restaurants and wineries) as well...

D. Eleinne Basa
Jackson, NJ

Continuing to strive for excellence in art has always been Eleinne's goal. She believes painting is a constant learning process; every painting a new set of experiences and discoveries. She tries to immerse herself in great art by constantly soaking in those on display at museums and galleries. Paintings by the likes of Zorn, Sergeant, and Cassatt continue to inspire and motivate her to reach for a certain quality in her paintings.
Eleinne credits much of her knowledge to the classical training she had while growing up in Manila. When she was only seven years old, her parents enrolled her at the Children's Museum and Library where she studied for eight years. It was here that she learned the fundamentals of light and shadow, value scales and colors, and also, the use of different media, from charcoal to oil. At age nine, she
started to dabble in oil paints. She even remembers painting "en plein air."...

Artistic Beauty from Horticultural Chaos
by John Stoa
Scottish artist John Stoa who also happened to be a very keen gardener, discovered that his new allotment garden would not only provide exercise, fresh air and a supply of vegetables fruit and flowers but also a major source of inspiration for a new series of paintings.
John finds his love of gardening a perfect partner for relaxation while taking a break from the creative processes in his art world. The garden is also the main source for ideas for floral paintings. Recent ones have included rhododendrons, azaleas, pansies, roses, lilies, carnations and fuchsias.

On climaxing
by Robert Genn
To have climax, you need quietude.
To have light, you need dark.
To have focus, you need lack of focus.
To have delicacy, you need roughness.
To have surprises, you need plain facts.
To have colour surprises, you need grays.
To have activation, you need blandness.
To have birth, you need death.
Symphonies, movies, plays, novels, songs--all tend to have a climax. Life and love have climaxes. Climax is one of the essential life experiences. Without climax, nothing seems to get anywhere. Climax represents the successful completion of the story, the denouement of the plot, the reason for all the effort, the snapshot at the height of the action.
Lots of paintings are short on climaxes. A climax in a painting means coming to light, a center of interest, a delicate part, a colour surprise, activation, sudden insight or rebirth, etc. In the same way that other art forms build a case, foreshadow, anticipate, disclose and darken before the light, so should paintings. If you look at the acknowledged great works of art, you often get the feeling, "Somethin's happenin' here," even if what it is ain't exactly clear. You may also have noticed some quite ordinary subjects come with built-in climaxes--mountains, crashing waves, sunsets, etc. Maybe that's why this sort of material remains forever popular.

GREAT DEALS ON PRINTS
We first introduced our fine art reproduction services since in 2002. It has been a great success here at Colossal Image Printing. The reason of our success is that we understand the printing process as well as the art itself. We have been reproducing original paintings as small as 4X6 to as large as 120X130(yes, thats almost 11ft tall!).

A painter's ass
WORD HISTORY A painter's ass is not a phrase that immediately brings to mind an accessory to the artist's profession. But easel comes to us from the Dutch word ezel, meaning ass, donkey. The Dutch word was eventually extended to mean an upright frame for displaying or supporting something, in the same way that the English word horse has come to mean a piece of gymnastic equipment with an upholstered body. |
